The armed conflict has been escalating in Afghanistan since August. Many children have been killed and injured in provinces in conflict such as Kabul, Kandahar, Khost and Paktia provinces, and the situation is worsening every single day. UNICEF has arrived the refugee shelter providing children with psychosocial support. Mobile health teams are also reaching the shelter, support the urgent need of humanitarian assistance.
On the other side of the world, the devastating earthquake hit Haiti on mid-August 2021, with major impact in the southwestern region. Thousands of injuries and casualties are reported in multiple cities. Homes, school and hospitals have been reduced to rubble, and the media is reporting over thousands of deaths and injuries. UNICEF medical kits to support the victims have already been delivered to main hospitals with additional health, water and sanitation supplies have also already been provided to the affected women and children. We will continue to prioritize the resumption of essential services for the affected population.
In response to the earthquake, UNICEF is requesting a total of US$122.2 million to scale up its emergency interventions in Haiti this year. So far, less than 32 per cent of this required funding has been received. Please rush your life-saving gift to protect a child in danger right now. (In the unusual event that donations for Emergency Appeal for Afghanistan and Haiti exceed the needs, we will direct the gift to support children in crises.)
